“Pedigree Dogs Exposed” is to be shown on BBC 1, 9pm Tuesday August 19th.
Once more this highly emotive subject appears in the headlines. The BBC documentary claims to have found that pedigree dogs are suffering from genetic diseases as a result of years of ‘in-breeding’.
The BBC investigation states that physical looks are prioritised over health in UK pedigree show dogs. The program covers Cavalier King Charles Spaniels whose brains have grown too big for their skulls causing a condition called ‘Syringomyelia’, Boxers suffering from increasing Epilepsy, Greyhounds dependant on prescription steroids, Pugs suffering from breathing difficulties, Poodles with gender problem, Dalmatians and deafness, German Shepherds with hip dysplasia and Bulldogs which are unable to mate or give birth to their young without veterinary assistance.

According to a leading UK Dog Charity, The Dog’s Trust, three out of every four landlords prohibit dogs in their rental properties, adding another complication to the number of unwanted dogs in rescue shelters.
An increase in the amount of people seeking rental accommodation has caused a rise in the number of pets being abandoned and dumped onto rescue charities, according to the Dog’s Trust. The charity would like to see more Landlords permitting tenants to move in with dogs.

Police dog ‘Sam’, a nine year old German Shepherd dog, was strangled and left unconscious as he helped his handler, PC Ian Head, arrest a man.
PC Head and Sam were on duty when a car went by with no lights on. PC Head chased the car and managed to make it stop. The man ran off and climbed onto the roof of another car chased by Sam. The dog gripped the man and managed to pull him off the car but the man then caught Sam by his collar and twisted it round until Sam fell unconscious. PC Head used his baton to make the man release Sam. After a short time Sam regained consciousness and helped PC Head to arrest the man who was later charged with failing to provide a specimen on suspicion of drink driving.
Sam has been given the Warwickshire Police Dog Action of the Year trophy.
