Monday, November 19th, 2007

Police dog ‘Sam’, a nine year old German Shepherd dog, was strangled and left unconscious as he helped his handler, PC Ian Head, arrest a man.

Sam - Police Dog strangled on dutyPC Head and Sam were on duty when a car went by with no lights on. PC Head chased the car and managed to make it stop. The man ran off and climbed onto the roof of another car chased by Sam. The dog gripped the man and managed to pull him off the car but the man then caught Sam by his collar and twisted it round until Sam fell unconscious. PC Head used his baton to make the man release Sam. After a short time Sam regained consciousness and helped PC Head to arrest the man who was later charged with failing to provide a specimen on suspicion of drink driving.

Sam has been given the Warwickshire Police Dog Action of the Year trophy.
