Dogs struggling to find homes in rented houses

Landlords of rented accommodation are making life harder for the nation’s rescue and unwanted dogs.

According to a leading UK Dog Charity, The Dog’s Trust, three out of every four landlords prohibit dogs in their rental properties, adding another complication to the number of unwanted dogs in rescue shelters.

An increase in the amount of people seeking rental accommodation has caused a rise in the number of pets being abandoned and dumped onto rescue charities, according to the Dog’s Trust. The charity would like to see more Landlords permitting tenants to move in with dogs.

Clarissa Baldwin, Chief Executive of Dog’s Trust said: “Pet owners who need to rent privately are being forced to live in unsuitable properties, or rent with their pets without consent from their landlord”.

Staff in the Leeds branch of Dog’s Trust have watched their waiting list for dogs grown from 75 to a massive 640 in just the past six months. They also suggested this was caused partly by household spending being reigned in due to the current economic climate.

This problem is only set to get worse as more and more people duck out of the property market or hold off on getting involved until the current slowdown is over. If landlords will not be more flexible with allowing dogs in their properties, then the problem will increase in the coming months, adding to the suffering of thousands of rescue dogs in the UK.
