Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755 – 1843), a German physician, founded homeopathic medicine in the early 1800’s. He had graduated as a Doctor of Medicine, in 1779, and at that time scientific advances were being made in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology, and anatomy.
The practise of medicine was still based on superstition, and a complete lack of knowledge of the human system.
Dr. Hahnemann knew this and began to write critically of the current practises. His papers on arsenic poisoning and hygiene caused an uproar when published.
Hahnemann theorised that disease is a disruption in the body’s life force, and the body could be stimulated to heal itself. So began the use of homeopathy to cure disease.
Homeopathic medicine uses plants and minerals to stimulate natural defences within the human body. The medicines are chosen for their ability to cause similar symptoms the person is experiencing. “Homoios” in Greek means, similar, and “pathos” means disease or suffering. Balance is established within the sick person by using a medicine that is similar to the symptoms the person is experiencing.

The medicine works with the person’s natural defences rather than against them. Such was the success of homeopathic medicines that it became popular throughout Europe. It was used to treat yellow fever, cholera, scarlet fever, and many other infectious diseases.
Homeopathic medicines have been shown to work on children, and animals.
Homeopathy is a system of medicine that uses micro doses of natural substances such as herbs, bark, seeds, berries, flowers, minerals and animal matter. Homeopathic remedies do not create side effects. They are used to treat skin problems, hair loss, spinal and joint degeneration, dysplasia, arthritis and bone problems, organ problems, itching, diarrhoea, poor digestion, and many other human medical complaints.
Our dogs are exposed to thousands of toxins just as we are, through food, water and air. Vets and dog owners are turning to homeopathy to stimulate their sick pet’s natural defences. A homeopath recognises that symptoms represent the efforts of the organism to adapt to and defend against various stresses or infections. If you see that health is balance and harmony, and the symptoms represent imbalances, then the role of the homeopathic practitioner is to restore the balance and gradually build up the dog’s body to the best that it can be.
The use of homeopathy and homeopathic remedies to treat animals has long been popular in Europe. In France there are around 1,000 homeopathic veterinarians using this form of treatment exclusively. In the US, the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association includes 250 homeopathic vets who use solely homeopathic treatments. It is a branch of medicine recognised by Federal law. The standards for strength, purity, and quality of canine homeopathic remedies have been established by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA.)
An avid enthusiast of homeopathy is the current reigning monarch of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth. She never travels anywhere without taking her box of homeopathic remedies with her. Her son, Prince Charles, favours Arnica., a well known remedy for bruises, to use after playing polo.
Homeopathic remedies are said to heal without harming.
