K9Obedience Breed Profile

Origin: England

Breed Purpose: The Curly Coated Retriever was bred for retrieving wildfowl over land or water.

Kennel Club Dog Group: Gundog

Height: Bitch 23-25in., Dog 25-27in.

Weight: Bitch 70-90lbs., Dog 80-100lbs.

Lifespan: 9-15 years

Exercise Needs: The Curly Coated Retriever needs an exercise regime that involves playing retrieving games and swimming. This is not a dog that trots around quietly but one which runs constantly at full gallop then throws himself into any lake or river to cool off.

Feeding Needs: The Curly is a deep-chested dog so should be fed twice a day rather than one big meal to avoid bloat. This dog needs to be fed a high quality food and many breeders recommend feeding a more natural diet of fresh meat and even vegetables.

Common Ailments: The Curly does have some health issues such as Cataracts, Entropion (problems with the eyelids), Cardiac Disease, and Epilepsy.

Physical Description: The Curly Coated Retriever is an upstanding, well muscled dog. The overall appearance is one of endurance and strength. Its outline and carriage give the dog a graceful elegance not found in other retriever breeds. They are slightly angulated front and rear end and hold themselves erect. When in motion the Curly displays a smooth, powerful gait. The head is wedge shaped and the stop is shallow and sloping. The eyes are almond shaped and are black or brown in black dogs, and brown or amber in liver coloured dogs. The jaws are long and the Curly has a scissor bite. Most unique to this breed is the curly coat which is either solid black or solid liver or no other colours. Its coat comprises a dense mass of tightly packed curls that lie close to the skin. The coat is waterproof and the density gives protection against the weather, icy water and thorny undergrowth. There are no curls on the face, forehead, front of the forelegs and the feet. In these places the hair is smooth. There is no undercoat.

Curly Coated Retriever K9 Obedience Dog Breed Summary:

The Curly Coated Retriever is a self confident, proud and intelligent dog that was bred to work as long as there was work to be done.

As a companion these dogs are extremely responsive to their family and friends. They can be aloof with strangers.

As a family pet the Curly is calm and affectionate but can be a little sensitive. They need early, gentle but firm dog training and need to be properly socialised.

The Curly Coated Retriever makes a perfect pet for the outdoor family that will appreciate the fun loving but sporting abilities of this breed.
