Field Spaniel Dog Breed Profile

Field Spaniel
The Field Spaniel is one of the rarer breeds of Spaniels.

K9Obedience Breed Profile

Origin: England

Breed Purpose: The Field Spaniel was bred to retrieve game.

Kennel Club Dog Group: Gundog

Height: Bitch 15-17 in., Dog 16-18 in.

Weight: Bitch 35-43lbs., Dog 43-50lbs.

Lifespan: 9-15 years

Exercise Needs: The Field Spaniel is a working dog that needs plenty of daily exercise. It is better if the exercise is off lead but this dog has a tendency to follow scents and run off so must have a perfect recall. They love to play ball and retrieving games.

Feeding Needs: This dog has no special feeding requirements but can be a fussy eater so should not be given treats.

Common Ailments: Generally a sound, healthy dog with few genetic breed problems. Their pendulous ears are prone to ear infections and need to be kept dry and clean.

Physical Description: The Field Spaniel is longer than he is tall. The head is well defined with a long, lean muzzle and strong jaws. The eyes are almond shaped and dark brown or hazel in colour. They have long, muscular necks and strong bodies. The front legs are straight and the hind quarters are very muscular. The tail has always been traditionally docked to one third of its length, is carried low set, with some feathering. The Field Spaniel has a long silky coat that is wavy and flat. The coat is dense and weather resistant with more feathering on the body and the legs. The colouring can be solid or bicoloured in liver, roan, light liver, and black. They can have ticked areas and a small amount of white on the chest.

Field Spaniel K9 Obedience Dog Breed Summary:

The Field Spaniel is an active, sporting dog that unlike most of the other gundogs, loves to be indoors as much as he does outside.

They are sociable, friendly and good with children although they can form strong bonds with one person.

The Field Spaniel can make a lot of noise so they need early training to stop barking on command.

Overall the Field Spaniel is a cheerful active dog for anyone that appreciates the fresh air and the outdoor country life.
