Newfoundland puppies require a well balanced diet that must follow the breeders or veterinarians recommendations. This is extremely important as too little or too much protein can affect the growth rate and result in bone and joint problems as the dog matures. The adult Newfie does not eat very much as they have a low metabolism. They eat around the same portions as a Labrador sized dog. Food and water bowls should be raised as this dog is prone to Bloat. They do drink a lot of water which should be available for them at all times. Do not be tempted to feed this dog too many treats or tidbits as they can quickly become obese.
The Newfoundland is a strong, healthy dog but there are some hereditary problems. They are prone to hip dysplasia and a serious heart condition called ‘Sub Aortic Stenosis' (SAS.) They can also inherit eye problems so it is advisable to only purchase puppies from breeders that have had their stock hip-scored and tested for hereditary problems.
The Newfoundland is a giant of a dog and its general appearance is one of strength and power. They have a huge head with a broad skull and a pronounced stop. They have a wide but short muzzle. The ears are set well to the side of the head and are pendant. The eyes are small, set deep and are wide apart. The expression is soft and kind. The body is big and strong showing muscles and power. The tail is broad and is never carried upright. The feet are webbed. This dog's coat can be long, coarse, straight or wavy. It is extremely oily and water resistant. The undercoat is very dense. The coat colours are black, grey, and brown. Overall, the appearance of this dog is one of immense power and strength.
Newfoundland K9 Obedience Dog Breed Summary:
The Newfoundland is famous for its natural instinct to save lives in water. In fact it is as much at home in water as it is on land.
This gentle giant is a true working dog that has proved to be an invaluable assistant to man, whether saving lives or pulling heavy loads.
The Newfie forms an immense bond with its family and can become seriously depressed without them. This does present a problem for any potential owner if they tend to travel a lot. The dog does not do well in kennels.
They are playful, kind and gentle but can also be a powerful guard dog should it feel that its family is threatened. The Newfie seems to have the ability to sense danger and will act on its own initiative to protect its family.
This dog adores children and is said to be the perfect nanny! Training must begin from an early age and must never be harsh as this dog is sensitive to anger and impatience. Owners must make allowances for the dog as it does move slowly and cannot race around as other more agile dogs often do.
The Newfoundland is a suitable pet for an active family with a large enough house and garden to accommodate such a big dog. They must also be prepared to clear up a lot of slobber from this drooling giant! |
