The coat does need a lot of attention to keep the skin and the coat healthy.

Physical Description: The overall appearance of the Standard Poodle is one of a medium sized dog with a profuse wiry coat that is often clipped and groomed in various styles. The head is long and fine with a moderate stop. The eyes are dark and almond shaped with an intelligent and lively expression. The ears are quite long, wide and hang close to the head. They are covered with an abundance of hair. The neck is well proportioned and carries the head proudly. The body is strong and muscular with a straight back and a rounded rump. The legs are straight and muscular. The tail is set high and angled away from the body. This was traditionally docked and is now sometimes clipped to leave a pom-pom on the end. The coat is profuse, harsh, thick and curly. The coat colours are solid colours of white, black, silver, blue, brown and apricot. All in all the Standard Poodle is an elegant working dog with a lively character.

Standard Poodle K9 Obedience Dog Breed Summary:

This dog is intelligent, playful, obedient and lively. They are real show offs and love to perform tricks. They can be over sensitive and need firm but gentle training. Harsh tones or signs of impatience will prove to be counter productive with this dog and can result in the animal developing nervous aggression. They love children with whom they will play for hours. They can tolerate other pets in the household. They do not moult so are perfect for anyone that suffers with allergies. The Standard Poodle does not mind where it lives, apartment or otherwise as long as it has lots of play and affection. They do not like to be left on their own for long periods and have a tendency to bark and be destructive if neglected in any way. Another point to consider is that this dog needs regular grooming which can prove to be quite expensive. The Standard Poodle is well suited to a family that is active and full of fun.
