This little dog needs regular exercise to keep fit and healthy. They enjoy playing games in the garden. Too much exertion makes the dog pant and wheeze so they need relatively little exercise compared with other breeds.
The Pug can easily become greedy so care must be taken not to let it get overweight. Adhere to the breeder’s recommended quantities and never feed the dog sugary treats.
The Pug suffers with respiratory problems. They quickly become breathless and wheeze if they exert themselves too much. Never leave this dog in an enclosed space that may become too warm and that has poor ventilation such as in a car or small room. They are susceptible to heatstroke, they catch colds easily and they are very sensitive to hot or cold temperatures. They also suffer with Keratites, (eye inflammation) and ulcers in the eyes. They are quite well-known for wheezing and snoring when asleep.
The Pug is a square shaped dog that is solid and compact. The head is large and round and the face is wrinkled. The eyes are large and prominent with a soft, gentle expression. The ears can be rose shaped, (folding over and back) or button shaped, (folding over and forwards.) The muzzle is short and square and the jaws are undershot. The neck arches slightly and is short and thick. The body is short and stocky with a wide chest and a level topline. The front legs are strong and muscular and sit well under the body. The hind legs are strong with a well turned stifle. The tail twists and curls over to fall on the hip. The coat is short and fine and the coat colours are apricot, silver, fawn, black and all of these colours have a black mask on the face and “black” thumb or, “diamond” marks on the ears.
Pug K9 Obedience Dog Breed Summary:
The Pug is an intelligent, lively, happy and sensitive little dog. They develop a strong bond with their family and love playing with children. They get on well with other pets and other dogs but do not usually make good guard dogs as some people believe, they are simply far too friendly! When this dog breathes it sounds much like a cat purring. They can be better than some other breeds when left, as they are quite with their own company for reasonable periods so they can suit a working couple. They also do not need a lot of space, both due to their size and their respiratory weaknesses, basically meaning that a small house or apartment can be plenty of room for them to be themselves. The Pug makes a trusting and loyal companion for anyone who can give it the love and affection it needs. They are easy to care for and very easy to please. An all round easy dog to own for those who want a small dog with a big heart and character. |
