The name ‘Poodle' comes from the German word ‘Pudel' meaning to paddle or splash around in water.

Origin: France

Breed Purpose: To retrieve Water Fowl.

Kennel Club Dog Group: Toy

Height: Both 25.5cm.

Weight: Both 3-4kg.

Lifespan: 12-15 years

Exercise Needs: To remain in top health and condition the Toy Poodle needs a daily walk but can also get enough exercise by playing games at home.

Feeding Needs: This dainty dog only eats small amounts and can be a fussy eater. Adhere to the recommended quantities and avoid giving too many treats.

Common Ailments: This dog is prone to ear infections so care must be taken to keep the ears clean and dry. They can also have digestive problems and can suffer with heart disease.

Physical Description: The Toy Poodle is a petite dog that is elegant and lively. The head is long and the eyes are almond shaped. The ears are long, wide and hang to the cheeks. The body is small and square shaped and the top line is level with a slight dip behind the withers. The tail is traditionally docked. The Poodles coat appearance depends entirely on how it is clipped. The three basic styles are:
  • The Continental Clip
  • The Puppy Clip
  • The English Saddle Clip
The coat can be a variety of colours.

This lively little dog is very easy to train and they are a joy to live with. They will make everyone laugh with their amusing ways.

Despite being very friendly the Toy Poodle is not generally considered good with toddlers and young children. They can live quite happily with other pets.

This is a dog that is well suited to apartments and city life and will be the perfect pet for single people, families or the elderly.
