Miniature Poodle 'Bailey' |
|
Hi all,
I am a new member, here are some details about me and my dog.
My husband and I live near Bognor Regis, West Sussex with our male miniture poodle called Bailey.
We got Bailey just over a year ago, he was being fostered as the breeder had died suddenly and he and
his brother and mum were taken in by a dog groomer when they were only 4 weeks old. The breeder had about 10 poodles
and the others went to the RSPCA. We gave Bailey a home when he was 3 months old. He has always been a bossy boots,
we hadn't had a puppy before so found it very hard having lost old dogs 2 years previously. However, I've always enjoyed training
and enrolled at puppy class asap, I found a lovely one not too far away where there is a purpose built barn with non slip floor and small
classes. It soon became obvious that Bailey is nervous, he plays well with other dogs but likes to be the one doing the chasing around
and isn't too keen on big dogs if they're very full on.
He's now 15 months and I would say from about 5 or 6 months he started to show aggression to me and my husband. This has been very worrying and I have posted a question on the behaviour forum about him. I would say it's a nervous aggression opposed to dominance.
I feel as if I've done everything right, going to training classes, and he is very good when we're out, he always comes when called. I did intend going to agility with him but I've put that on hold at the moment, I think it might make him too excited and he needs quiet calm handling at the moment.
I've tried to make him trust me and we've never hit him when he's done wrong, we say 'no' a lot but other than that we haven't scolded him. But he does have boundaries, he's yelled at when he chases our hens, he's not allowed in the bedroom. I've watched all the dog programmes possible, got the books, dvd's, and got the t shirt so to speak!
This is all for now as have to go and shut the girls up for the night before Mr Fox comes to visit.
Happy New Year to all,
Linda |
