Norwegian Elkhound - 'Freya' |
|
I am the owner of Freya - my third Norwegian Elkhound. She is three years old this summer and is my little princess.
She is the first bitch I have owned and how different she is to the 'boys'. She is quiet, loves to be as close to a human as possible and gives you 'looks' to tell you what she wants. She even walks like a girl. Wiggles just a little and avoids puddles on the pavements.
Freya loves to go out anywhere - but when in the house she is most comfortable on the sofa beside me. She jumps up and puts her head on my keyboard when I have my laptop out. Then moves over when pushed away to huff on the other end of the sofa!
My previous two elkhounds were Spookie who I had for 16 years and Loki who sadly had to be put to sleep just recently after a tragic car accident aged 8. I have also had a Collie/Wolfhound cross called Scruffy.
I was raised in a house where greyhounds and whippets were the norm so life is incomplete without a dog or two around the house. My husband however is not a dog person really. Will tolerate a well behaved one but finds training and dealing with boisterous types a chore.
Elkhounds are lovely to have as pets. They are medium sized and very good with children. They are intelligent and have very strong hunting instincts. They can be stubborn and need you to be firm - but usually a food treat will tempt them to behave.
They obviously enjoy being walked but are also happy to settle down with the family too. Their only negative point in my opinion is their hair. It gets everywhere! They shed a lot and you have to get used to hair in your food and balls of fluff rolling out from under the sofa. You also need a good vacuum. Being loved by an Elkhound is worth a hundred balls of fluff!
