My Rescue Dobermann : 'KODI' |
|
Kodi was born in Wales on 25th September, 2006 and somehow his first owners managed to buy him and have him delivered to their home in the home counties.
They already had a large male long-haired German Shepherd and perhaps were not thinking things through when they decided to introduce their new pup as the GSD took an immediate dislike to the new puppy.
Having had Dobermans in my family since the 1980s I had waited a number of years until my children were of an age that they could understand and be at least half responsible around these demanding dogs, so this summer I started out my search for a Dobermann Pup. On searching one website I discovered a ‘7 month' old male dobe being offered (at a price) as it was in urgent need of rehoming. I took a few hours to discuss the options with my wife and children then phoned up the advert and went up to see this young pup.
The dog I found was cowering in a travel cage with a metal floor and just half a towel to sit on, and nervous would be an inadequate word to describe the wreck that was before me. I instantly resolved to take the dog that minute and if I couldn't sort him out I would have him destroyed as the best kindness to the poor soul.
He had spend twenty three and a half hours a day in that pen, the reason I found when I first groomed him was the numerous lines of stitches round his throat and neck, if he had been a car he could have been described as a cut and shut!

The first day Kodi saw the sun,
48 hours after we got him. |
Kodi was a basket case, I worried if his tail would ever lift, he was just a bag of terror, however we took him home and the process of ‘love cures everything' began.
Late into the second day he did the unimaginable, he actually wagged
his tail!
On the morning of the third day I wasn't down by the 6am he was used to, so of course he ate a suede leather arm chair!
It's now 7 months on and he is not perfect but he is pretty much an insane normal Doberman. He sticks to me like glue, he has a perfect sit, down and shakes hands, his recall is pretty good although the selective hearing in the park sometimes blotts his copy book and I am working hard with him as he will take offence with small dogs when they have a go at him, but in all he is one of the best Dobermanns in both character and shape that I have ever had the pleasure to know.
Yes he is hard work, yes he did eat a number of remotes, shoes, and even when I went up stairs to the toilet one time, he did eat the arm of the suede sofa but he is worth it.
