Choosing a Dog Breed |
|
Choosing a dog breed or just getting a dog at all is a crucial decision which could affect the lives of you and your family for well over a decade.
Over the years we have worked with all kinds of dog breeds, from toy dogs to large working dogs and guard dog breeds.
During this time we have gained a wealth of knowledge about many of the dog breeds which are out there. Whilst we love all dog breeds, certain breeds have behaviour characteristics and temperaments which may suit certain types of owners, or not, as the case may be. These characteristics are things you must be aware of before getting a dog, and before even choosing a particular dog breed to look into further.

So we are building this dog breed profile directory to offer a unique insight into the main dog breeds through the eyes of dog trainers and canine behaviourists, not just as a standard guide to the basic weights and heights which you can find anywhere.
When you are choosing a breed of dog, you need to know some very important things about the dog and any breed specific traits or features. These include the heights and weights etcetera, but it is just as important that you look into a breed from a training and obedience viewpoint too. After all you will be living and working with this dog for many years, and depending on your lifestyle and home setup, you may be much better suited to some dog breeds more than others.
Our Dog Breed Profiles have received fantastic feedback from both dog breeders and dog owners alike who are amazed at just how well we know their breed.
We hope this directory helps you gain information which all good dog owners should seek both prior to and during the process of choosing a dog.
Read our Free Dog eBook before choosing a dog breed profile
Each and every breed which we add to the list is given our own K9Obedience Summary at the bottom, and we would suggest that this is the most important part for those thinking of getting a new dog as we offer our honest and experienced knowledge of what sort of lifestyle the breed generally suits, and what it does not.
It should be pointed out that this is merely a general guide to the breeds, and all dogs have a totally unique character so may not follow the profile exactly. However, the general features of a breed are the best place to start when considering a breed for purchase or ownership, though after studying this, we would urge anyone to actually visit owners of the breed in question, and get a feel for the personality of the dogs in their home environment before going out and actually getting a dog of any kind.
Please DO NOT just go and buy a puppy, then start reading dog books when it all goes wrong. This is the single biggest cause of the thousands of dogs rescued just last year in the UK.
Read, talk to owners, and study the dog breed you are considering before choosing a dog to take home and begin a new life with.
Getting a dog is one of the best things you can do to enrich your life, and add pleasure and fun to your household. Take the decision VERY seriously, and NEVER EVER get a dog on a whim. It just isn't in the dog's best interests, nor your own, no matter HOW much it seems perfect at the time.
There are always thousands of puppies for sale, and this isn't likely to change, so the decision can and should be taken carefully and with as much information gathered as possible beforehand.
